Inside BloodRunes: How We Balanced Luck and Strategy for Epic Rune Casting Showdowns

Aug 13, 2025 | Board Games, Top Story | 0 comments

Welcome, rune-casters! I'm Zach Turner, founder of Zoracle Games and one of the lucky (and sometimes unlucky!) folks who helped craft the wild Viking world of BloodRunes. If you’ve played even a single game, you’ve felt it—the thrill when your gambit pays off, the groan when the runes just don’t cooperate, the rush of a comeback no one saw coming.

But how did we actually strike that magic blend of heart-pounding luck and rewarding strategy? Today, I’m pulling back the curtain and sharing the design process that makes every Viking showdown in BloodRunes feel fair, fierce, and full of surprises.

And a quick heads-up: If reading this fires you up for more, check out our upcoming expansion, Curse of the Gods—the biggest shakeup our runic battlegrounds have ever seen!

Why Luck Matters (and When It Sucks)

Let’s get real: if you strip chance out of a board game, you risk two things. First, making it feel like chess—amazing, but sometimes a little intimidating for new players. Second, you kill off those jaw-dropping, how-did-that-happen moments that make everyone yell and laugh around the table.

But pure luck? That just leads to chaos. You might as well flip coins. In a Viking saga, everyone wants the sense they can shape their own fate… even if the gods sometimes laugh at our plans.

So our first job in designing BloodRunes was deciding: What do we trust to chance, and what do we hand to the players’ strategy?

Breaking Down Luck vs. Skill: How We Did It

1. Controlled Chaos: Randomness with Levers

From the start, casting runes was at the heart of BloodRunes. And we wanted there to be some choice involved, not just a random draw; that's how the rune river was born. And when you take that rune you want, the suspense of a possible Loki is palpable.

That worked so well, we made the spell river as well to give SOME choice, but limited. Speaking of limiting, capping your spell book at 6 spells without being able to discard them (you must cast them to make room for more spells) was a huge boon for strategy: you have to choose wisely which spells you take so you don't clog your book up with less effective spells.

These mechanics bring real decisions to every draw. Sometimes, you push your luck. Other times, you play it safe. image_1

2. Open Information: No Surprises (That You Could Have Prevented)

We wanted a game where a new player might win thanks to a bold play or stroke of luck, but skillful players could notice patterns, read the table, and plan ahead. That’s why:

  • All spells are face-up. You can see what others might do, who they might target and adjust accordingly.
  • The only “hidden” things are caster's runes—keeping the suspense of whether a caster can really pull off his plan, making every reveal a communal thrill, not a nasty “gotcha.”

This blend leaves space for dramatic upsets, but rewards careful attention and smart play.

3. Comebacks Are Real… But So Is Punishment

Nothing kills a game night faster than a runaway leader, right? We wanted BloodRunes to be tense to the final turn. That led to design choices like:

  • Huge Swings: You can be in last place one round, but build up your engine enough to be winning by the next. The native cooldown feature of the runes means once a player pulls ahead, he's going to need time to build back up again and won't run away with the game.
  • Catch-Up with the Gods: In the new Curse of the Gods expansion, even if you don't get to use the gods as much as the other players, the game takes pity on you by redistributing sacrifices, helping you keep up with the pack.
  • Epic Finale: It's anyone's game down to the final Blood Fortune. Temporary alliances and stronger players fighting each other can allow the poorer clans to come up from behind for an epic win. Whether you have 3 Acolytes or 6, glorious victory can be yours.

Luck can shift the tides—but smart planning carries you to the finish.

Strategic Depth: Where Skill Shines Most

While fate rules the rivers, we made sure the core of BloodRunes is outwitting your rivals. Here’s where pure strategy pulls ahead:

  • Gathering your Runes: Going on the offensive, gather spears; trying to ward up, look for fire. Seasoned players know that certain spell actions have some commonly shared runes.
  • Pay attention to your Enemies: When players first begin, they tend to only keep track of what they need. But since all spells are open, it's very important to know what other casters are planning and especially important to NOT play runes that could help your enemies.
  • Temporary Alliance: Is there one player who's almost to victory? Work with another caster to help them build a rune configuration that could knock the leader down a notch. Then take your chance to strike!
  • Long-Term Planning: Build your engine by getting spells and runes that complement one another

We see it at every tournament: a veteran player pulls ahead—then someone dares the gods and lands the perfect combo! image_2

The Playtesters’ War Room: Listening, Tweaking, Balancing

As a game designer, I had my early ideas about what balance should look like, but nothing beats seeing games in action. We logged hundreds of hours playtesting—at kitchen tables, at conventions, and via our tabletop sim.

What did we learn?

  • Feedback from All Levels: Newcomers hated feeling “stuck” on bad luck, so we added more tools to shift fate. Veterans craved new tactical levers—so more asymmetry arrived in the form of Clan Attributes.
  • Watching for Snowballs: Any strategy that could steamroll was adjusted—or given a counter.
  • Comedic Catastrophes: We left a few wild swings in the game’s DNA. After all, a little chaos is what makes a Viking tale.
  • Blind Playtest: By far the most useful playtests were blind playtests, where I give the players the rule book and game and they have to figure it out. This was essential for getting not only the balance of the game right, but making the rulebook as comprehensive and easy to understand as possible.

The bottom line is: If a strategy or lucky break won over and over, we tweaked things. If people told stories about their epic losses and wilder wins, we knew we were on the right path.

Stories from the Table: “Beginner’s Luck” and Veteran Vengeance

We’ve all seen it: someone playing their first game pulls the right rune at the right time, and suddenly they’re the terror of the north. But here’s the cool part—when that happens, it’s always because they positioned themselves to succeed, took advantage of available tools, or simply played bold.

More often, the old pros at the table navigate around bad draws, bait out mistakes, convince others that another caster is more dangerous, and seize victory when it counts. The balance means everyone has a shot, but the path to Valhalla feels earned.

And as BloodRunes grows with each expansion, watching those stories evolve is the best reward.

The Future: Curse of the Gods, and More Ways to Mix Fate and Skill

With our upcoming expansion, Curse of the Gods, we’re cranking up both risk and reward. God cards, each with unique abilities, can swing fortune dramatically, mechanics that let you tempt fate even harder, and godly powers that rewrite the rules of luck itself. We listened to everything players were asking for and we through them to the gods along with some very fun and thematic powers.

If you think you’ve mastered the balance, wait till you face the fickle wrath (or blessing) of the Aesir! The Preview page on Kickstarter is live now—check it out, give it a follow, and help us spread the word. The gods (and I) thank you.

Final Thoughts: Why the Right Balance Matters

In the end, BloodRunes works because no one holds all the cards—or runes. Sometimes you ride high on luck, sometimes you need to outthink the table, and most nights, everyone leaves with at least one epic story.
