Tips for Families Playing BloodRunes Together

Aug 21, 2025 | Board Games, Top Story | 0 comments

Gathering the whole family around the table for a board game night is already pretty special—but BloodRunes takes that energy and cranks it up a notch. It’s a game about clever tactics, a dash of luck, and weaving together all sorts of personalities (and ages!) into something memorable—whether you’re battling for glory or laughing about unlucky card rivers.

If you’re new to BloodRunes or just looking for ways to create the best family experience possible, you’re in the right place. Here’s how to turn an evening of BloodRunes into a family tradition you’ll keep talking about.

1. Set the Scene for Family Fun

Family game nights live and die by the vibe—so put away the screens, get out the snacks, and make sure everyone has a comfy seat at the table.

  • Keep distractions to a minimum — Silence the phones (unless you’re documenting a hilarious defeat!).
  • Prep the snacks — Finger food works best. No one likes Cheeto fingerprints on their rune cards.
  • Background music — A little low-key epic soundtrack turns BloodRunes into a Norse saga. Try a playlist inspired by Viking folk music or fantasy adventure themes for extra immersion.

2. Make the Rules Easy for All Ages

BloodRunes is easy to pick up, but young players will get the most out of it if you tweak how you teach the rules:

  • Explain as you go: Run through sample turns rather than reading every rule up front.
  • Use examples from the last game: “Remember when Dad tried to combo those two runes and it totally backfired? That’s why you want to save your runes for a big play.”
  • Clarify key terms: If you’ve got little ones, break down vocabulary like “Cast,” or “River,” into simple steps.

Pro tip: Use the supplied reference cards to remind yourself the 6 actions you can take and which runes are more rare. Leave the rulebook out and open for quick reference! Even veteran jarls need a cheat sheet now and then

3. House Rules Make It Yours

There are already variants in BloodRunes like playing asymmetrically with Clan Attributes or the Loki Variant but no two game nights (or families) are the same. Don’t be afraid to adjust the rules to fit your crew so every player is having fun.

  • Shorter games for younger kids: Try it with the Loki Variant where the board starts out with a Loki and once they’re on the board, Lokis cannot be covered.
  • Mulligans: I like to give every player at least one mulligan per game. A mulligan is basically a redo. They can take back their last action or change them to be in a more benficial order, but only if no one else has gone yet or new information hasn’t been revealed. And only once per game, maybe twice if it’s your first game.
  • Beginner bonuses: Let the family newbie redraw a dud rune once per game, or let them peek at a card before the start.

Remember: If everyone’s smiling, you’re doing it right. The official rules are a canvas—make them your own masterpiece.

4. Encourage Friendly Rivalries and Good Sportsmanship

Nothing ruins a family game night faster than a grudge match gone wrong. Here’s how to keep the fun competitive but friendly:

  • Celebrate clever plays, not just victories — “That combo was genius!” is always in style.
  • Share a post-game debrief — Take a few minutes after every game to do “best move,” “funniest moment,” and “what I’ll try next time.”
  • Losers’ choice — Whoever scores lowest gets to pick the next night’s game, snack, or music playlist. Everyone wins something!

5. Spotlight Learning Moments (Without the Boring Bits)

BloodRunes isn’t just fun—it sneakily teaches skills that are perfect for every age:

  • Strategic thinking: Weighing combos and options is problem-solving at its best.
  • Negotiation and alliance building: Perfect for chatty kids and adults who like a little banter.
  • Resource management: Learn the power of holding back (or going all in!) for the win.
  • Resilience: Sometimes the runes just don’t fall your way—shake it off, and play again. This is a big one in board games and I think it’s a great teaching tool for life.

Point out these moments in a fun way, not a lecture-y way: “That was an awesome strategy—did you spot a new combo?” or “You bounced back pretty fast from those raids!”

6. Keep It Fresh: New Modes & Expansions

Once your family has the basics down, try mixing things up:

  • Solo challenges for game night when only one or two can play: Test your skills against the deck on your own.
  • Expansion packs: BloodRunes is always growing. Curse of the Gods is coming this fall. Click here to get notified of the Kickstarter Launch. New cards and mechanics mean the game evolves right alongside your family.
  • Themed nights: Have a costume contest, make Viking-inspired snacks, or invent a special family Viking crown for the winner.

7. Build a Family Tradition

The best thing about BloodRunes is how it brings everyone together, whether you’re in it for the bragging rights, the teamwork, the raiding, or just a good laugh. Make a ritual out of family game night—use the same playlist, bake a special treat, or let the winner host a “victory interview.”

Before you know it, “BloodRunes Night” will be as legendary as any holiday—minus the stress and with way more high-fives.

Final Thoughts

Whether your family plays to win, plays to make up the silliest story, or just plays to hang out, BloodRunes is all about fun together. The only “right way” is the way that gets everyone to the table, runes in hand, and ready for adventure.
